Film-based Flat Art Pricing

All art reproduction is done to the highest quality standards available. Whenever possible, we try to match color and tone to the original, as closely as the process and price level allows. We have dedicated a viewing station where the digital file, slide, transparency, or print, can be compared to the original work, under controlled, 6500k lighting conditions. This is also where we do client approvals, an option extended to you.

For originals up to 32" x 40", we use a completely black room with a custom-built motorized 13’ vertical copystand, that holds teh large-format camera, as well as swing in for small and medium format setups. All work is shot on black velvet, unless another surface is provided by the client. This vertical setup allows for gravity to help us keep art flat, creating an efficient workflow, especially with unframed or paper or cloth work. The all-black, reflection-proof room also allows shooting pieces behind glass (extra charge). In this room, we have pre-set 45 degree cross lighting, with the extra cost option of using a 45 degree, off axis softer light, to create drop-shadows, and show off texture in paint, special finishes, or materials adhered to the surface.

For larger work, we have an adjoining studio, where we photograph larger works, or those requiring complex lighting. We have set rates for up to 6’ x 8’ pieces (as long as they fit through the door). We have shot larger works, if they are brought in rolled, by creating a special setup (extra charge). This setup usually entails using a special steel platform we had welded, suspended from the metal-truss ceiling, for shooting work as large as 12' x 16'. Beyond that size, we recommend doing it on-location.

Please keep in mind that the default cross-lighting setup will cast a hard shadow on the piece, if there is a frame. In order to make the art look good, we often have to use lighting that will not make the frame look good. If a piece has a shiny frame, and it is important for the frame to look as good as possible, the best method is to shoot the piece without a frame, and then change the lighting, and shoot the frame with lighting that is optimized for the shape and material of the frame. The two images are digitally composite, with the addition of realistic frame shadows. This will result in having everything look great, and the option of showing the painting cropped with no shadows, but will cost several times more than just having the art itself reproduce well.
